“HOMES, Inc. strengthens Eastern Kentucky communities by addressing housing challenges with innovative and sustainable solutions.,” says Seth Long, Executive Director.
Following the devastating floods in Eastern Kentucky, HOMES has played a key role in rebuilding efforts, recognizing that housing is fundamental to a healthy, stable community. One of its recent successes is the construction of a net-zero home for Lois Thompson, a longtime resident who had been living in a century-old coal camp house with poor insulation and limited accessibility. The new home, built on the same property, is fully accessible, energy-efficient, and equipped with solar panels—reducing her electric bill to just $21.50 per month.
“It’s about more than just housing. It’s about ensuring our communities are places where people can live, work, and thrive,” Long explains.
HOMES is also leading efforts to make solar-ready construction more accessible, proving that sustainability and affordability can go hand in hand in Appalachia’s recovery and growth.
