HomeOwnership Center, Inc. (HOC) is helping West Virginians build financial stability and plant long-term roots through homeownership.

“If we can plant people well in a sustainable, affordable, quality home, they are so much more likely to invest in their communities and stay in their jobs,” says Kate Somers, Executive Director of HOC.

The organization provides homeownership advising, financial counseling, and mortgage lending to ensure families are ready for the long-term responsibilities of owning a home. For example, they recently supported a newly divorced single mother who, after working with HOC to rebuild her finances, was able to purchase a home just down the block from her parents—securing both stability and essential childcare support. “Now she is stable,” Somers explains. “She doesn’t have to worry about childcare, and she can focus on her job, her community, and her children’s future.” HOC’s work extends beyond individual households, strengthening entire communities by ensuring that homeownership is accessible and sustainable for West Virginians.
